Occlusal (Bite) Appliances
Occlusal (biting) trauma occurs when either excessive force with function is present or compromised support of the teeth occurs (bone loss). This leads to mobile or loose teeth. The effects of occlusal trauma can be decreased by wearing an occlusal appliance.
In cases of clenching or grinding (bruxism) occlusal appliances are employed. We typically use either a Hawley Bite Pland (a retainer with a platform to hold your teeth apart) or a Full Occlusal Guard (similar to a sports guard but hard plastic).
A complete occlusal (bite) evaluation is performed prior to recommending the most appropriate treatment.
